His biggest passion by far has always been in and around the ocean with a dream to one day visit and continue this career path within the world heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. For the last five years he has been part of the team at Ocean Safari in Cape Tribulation/ Daintree Rainforest and also with Ocean Rafting in the Whitsundays.
Benny loves representing these incredible regions by showcasing the fringing reefs, outer reefs, amazing beaches and islands and the importance of understanding the amazing indigenous cultures. Giving them a unique, enjoyable and learned experience.
He enjoys connecting with his guests in a fun and engaging manner to inspire them to learn more about what they can do to make a difference in their daily lives.
“I believe awareness is the key and knowledge is power. We can’t ask people to look after something if they don’t appreciate or understand it, and love it as much as I do.”

Scuba diving began as a hobby, but it quickly grew into a deep passion for the underwater world and a want to see and understand as much of that new world. Whenever she gets the chance, Bernie is off scuba diving somewhere new. She is especially fascinated by shipwrecks, where history and marine life resilience come together, and every dive tells a story. That passion pushed her to step outside her comfort zone and join Ocean Safari and Ocean Rafting, where she started as a deckhand and now works as one of the skippers.
Her favourite moment of the day is when guests ask questions about the reef and marine life, moments she actively tries to create throughout the day. These conversations allow her to share what she knows, tell good stories, and spark curiosity, hoping to inspire others and help create more ocean lovers along the way.

Taylor leads our educational experience Reef Seeker, with a background in teaching there is nobody more suited to running our school group excursions and along with our incredible team showcased the GBR to over 2000 students last year!

Having moved to the Whitsundays in 2018, Scotty started his career working on overnight sailing vessels. Showcasing the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef to guests made him want to understand the reef more. Since moving to day trips, Scotty has had the opportunity to greater his understanding of the reef which has enabled him to help educate passengers on this amazing ecosystem.
“Becoming a Master Reef Guide will only further my passion and excitement for the Great Barrier Reef and give hope to others that we can have this natural wonder for many more generations to come.”

Now, as a Master Reef Guide, Abbey is able to share these stories, inspiring others, answering questions, and assisting guests in connecting deeply with the reef in the same way she once did. That first glimpse of the underwater world led her to Ocean Rafting, where she continued to learn about the reef and feels incredibly fortunate to spend her days creating those same unforgettable experiences for her guests and hopes to create that same sense of awe in others that she feels to help protect the reef.

As Head Skipper, Merran is a lead trainer within the team, filtering her knowledge through the team. With Merran at the helm, you can trust that whichever combination of guides you get onboard Ocean Rafting you will have an experience that creates memories that will last a lifetime.

”I am responsible for my guest’s wellbeing and now as a Master Reef Guide I am responsible for imparting factually correct information that will enlighten tourists and protect the reef for many years to come. And there is a certain level of pride associated with wearing a uniform that I have worked hard for, knowing that I am a representative of the Great Barrier Reef”

Permits & Program Participation
Eye On The Reef
Ocean Rafting participates in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority study, “Eye on the Reef “program. This monitoring program is the largest of its kind and relies on a strong relationship between The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, marine tourism operators such as ourselves who conduct Whitsunday tours and the reef research community. It is an ongoing exercise in collecting and documenting marine life, water temperatures and coral health.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA)
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protects and preserves the largest and richest system of coral reefs in the world. It incorporates most of Australia’s north-eastern continental shelf, including the Whitsunday islands and their magnificent fringing reefs. Ocean Rafting has several GBRMPA permits in order to visit the marine park on our daily Whitsunday tours and each passenger pays an Environmental Management Charge (EMC) fee as part of the price of their fare. These fees are vitally important in the day-to-day management of the Marine Park and in improving its long-term resilience.
