Cultural Heritage of the Whitsunday Region

June 25, 2021 by Ocean Rafting Eco Categories: Eco Articles/Blog, Great Barrier Reef, This Week On The Reef

The team at Ocean Rafting was this week humbled, and honoured, to welcome one of our beautiful land’s traditional owners, and Ngaro elder, Peter Pryor, to the Rafting family! The beautiful Whitsundays region lies in the Ngaro, Gia/Giya and Juru people’s country, whose history dates back over 10,000 years. There has long been a gap in knowledge and conversation with the traditional owners of this land. However, with the incredible work being done by these traditional owners, and fellow tourism operators, such as Whitsunday Paradise Explorer, the gap is being bridged, and the knowledge our team has eagerly and respectfully soaked up can now be shared more confidently knowing we have learnt the story of our traditional owners first-hand.

Ocean Rafting is a multi-award winning, Advanced Ecotourism Australia operation and our staff always strive to leave our guests with increased knowledge and awareness of the history, geography, islands, reef and marine life of the beautiful Whitsundays. Our expert team of Marine Biologists, Master Reef Guides and passionate Eco Hosts endeavour to represent, and be a voice, for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the 74 islands of the Whitsundays group and for the traditional owners of this beautiful country! We can’t thank Ngaro elder, Peter, enough for giving up his valuable time to speak to our whole team first-hand, enabling us to further share the history and stories of the Whitsundays’ traditional owners with our guests!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY: In Australia, it is respectful to always acknowledge the Traditional Owners of our Beautiful Country. By visiting the Whitsundays, you are staying on land traditionally owned and inhabited by the Gia, Giru and Ngaro People.

"We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging."

We encourage our guests to learn more about Australia's Indigenous People. Their journey is long and interesting and deserves to be shared and respected.
