The 2024 coral spawning event is a key focus of the Boats 4 Corals Reef Assist Project. This project aims to restore and strengthen the resilience of the Whitsundays Reefs. Ocean Rafting joined forces with Reef Catchments, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Traditional Owners, and other trusted tourism operators to support the crucial initiative in preparation for the upcoming spawning event.
Our team contribute by conducting surveys to monitor the presence of young recruits from last year’s spawning and perform colony assessments. The team carefully inspected coral species for eggs to assess their readiness for spawning.
The night of the coral spawning event presented challenging conditions, but the initiative continued as planned. Over 1 million coral larvae were successfully collected and released into reefs in need of restoration. This project plays a vital role in the rejuvenation of coral populations. Gathering coral spawn, incubating it in floating larval pools for 5-7 days, and then relocating the larvae to damaged reefs, helps to restore ecosystems impacted by events like cyclones.

Coral spawning is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events occurring once a year on the Great Barrier Reef. This synchronised release of sperm and eggs by coral polyps is timed perfectly with the lunar cycle and water temperature. The mass spawning event often involves hundreds of coral species, making the reef glow with vibrant colours. It’s a crucial event for coral reproduction! The larvae settles on the reef and develops into new coral colonies, helping sustain the delicate balance of the reef’s ecosystem.
We are proud to support this project and look forward to continuing our efforts to preserve and regenerate the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.
