Earlier this year, Ocean Rafting were apart of a successful partnership for ocean conservation and together with Biopixel Oceans embarked on an important mission: maintaining and redeploying acoustic receivers to monitor shark sightings around the Whitsunday Islands. Biopixel Oceans Foundation deliver research into the prevalence and behaviour of sharks in the Whitsundays. Shark movements are then tracked using acoustic receivers to provide an understanding of how sharks use the Whitsunday region.
During our 2-day expedition, a year’s worth of data was collected and is now ready for analysis. This data will help provide a better understanding of the movement patterns of these incredible creatures and their vital role in our ocean’s health.

By understanding where sharks travel, we can gain deeper insights into their behaviour, feeding, and migration habits. This information is crucial for conservation efforts, helping us protect these species from potential threats like overfishing and habitat destruction. This important research helps scientists and government better understand the movements and behaviour of sharks in the Whitsundays. It helps inform the Queensland Government’s approach to shark mitigation and SharkSmart education.
Sharks are apex predators that help maintain a balanced and healthy ecosystem. By regulating fish populations, they prevent overgrazing of vital seagrass beds and coral reefs, ensuring biodiversity thrives. Healthy sharks = healthy oceans!
